Sen. McClellan Statement on Charges Against Sen. Louise Lucas

RICHMOND – Today, Sen. Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond), the Vice Chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, released the following statement regarding the charges filed by the Portsmouth Police Department against Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas (D-Portsmouth) on the eve of Special Session:

“I am deeply concerned about the charges against my colleague Sen. L. Louise Lucas and other Black leaders in Portsmouth today,” McClellan said. “Portsmouth Police owe Sen. Lucas and the people of Virginia a clear answer on why these charges were filed. Specifically, the timing of these charges on the eve of a special session to take action on police and criminal justice reform is outrageous and suspicious. These charges will not stop the Senate of Virginia from taking on the racism and systematic inequity that Black and brown people experience when advocating for progress. I stand with my colleague and friend, Sen. Lucas.”
